Services to Queensland schools

SBH Queensland has been funded by the Queensland Department of Education to provide education and therapy services to schools since 1976.

In working with school staff, the Education and Therapy team contributes specialist skills and experience with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, their impact on the student at school and appropriate education adjustments to improve students’ access and participation. SBH Queensland provides services to children and their families from birth and the Education and Therapy team is able to bring knowledge of the student garnered from this history to the school.

Spina bifida and hydrocephalus require significant medical and surgical intervention throughout a student’s life and the Education and Therapy team can advise schools about the impact of these on the student’s schooling and provide advice on changes to equipment, access, toileting requirements and other adjustments that this intervention requires at school.

The Education and Therapy team comprises board registered occupational therapists, physiotherapists, a speech language pathologist and teachers. Members of the team undertake regular outreach trips to regional and rural Queensland and are in regular contact through email and phone.

SBH Queensland has insurance cover for professional indemnity, public liability and WorkCover.

The Department of Education and Training contributes funding to the SBH Queensland Education and Therapy Service through the Non State School Special Needs Organisations (NSSNO) and Non-School Organisations (NSO) programs.

A number of booklets written for schools can be found on the Resources page.
