CATH GILMORE...ON TOUR

Recently I had the opportunity to tour the west coast of America and Canada with the Griffith University Collegiate Singers. Directed by Alison Rodgers, twenty-one singers entertained audiences in six cities.

Our first stop was Los Angeles, where we spent two days. The first day was spent seeing the sights, including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and of course, Hollywood. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any stars. We were also trying to shake off jet lag after the thirteen hour flight. A trip to LA wouldn't be complete without a day at Disneyland. After we performed in Fantasyland, we had the rest of the day to thoroughly enjoy ourselves, and that we certainly did.

San Francisco, with it's gorgeous Victorian architecture, was the next stop on our itinerary. After another good show, we had a guided tour of the city and I walked down Lombard Street - the steepest street in San Francisco...and trust me, it was steep! I was very proud of myself. Our last day in San Francisco, we had the day to ourselves. I got the chance to visit the notorious Alcatraz and naturally, do some shopping!

The next two towns we visited are a little less well known, but almost as exciting. Arcata, in northern California was where the jacket and gloves came out of the suitcase. It was freezing! The redwood trees provided a lovely drive between Arcata and Corvallis, Oregon. Much to our delight, we drove through snow in the mountains - the first of much we were to encounter. Corvallis was the only place we were performing twice - in a beautiful church and at the Oregon State University.

The drive to Seattle was beautiful. The redwoods were gone and in their place, deciduous trees and fir trees. During our two day stay in Seattle, it snowed almost all the time. It was absolutely gorgeous. We gave our best performance of the tour at Seattle University and combined with one of their choirs for a spiritual.

Our last stop was Vancouver and although we were ready to go home, we had an excellent time here. We gave our final performance at the University of British Columbia and it was another great show, if I do say so myself. After a guided sightseeing tour of this beautiful city we headed back to Seattle to begin our long journey home - exhausted!

After nearly twenty hours I arrived at Brisbane airport glad to see my family and friends, after two weeks on the road. I can honestly say that I slept for a week after I got home - no kidding. The tour was absolutely amazing and I am glad I had the chance to go.

QUOTE FROM A YOUNG STUDENT WITH SPINA BIFIDA:

"Today was the best day of my life. My teacher played with us
with my ball and (he) treated me just like everybody else."
